Where I Was Then... Part 1

anorexia nervosa [(an-uh-rek-see-uh nur-voh-suh)]
A psychosomatic disorder in which the sufferer refuses to eat
and
undertakes activities (such as self-induced vomiting) to bring about
extreme weight loss. Anorexia, which is also characterized by a distorted
self-image, occurs most often in young women aged twelve to twenty-one and may
result in death if medical treatment is not obtained. Treatment for anorexia
often includes extensive counseling to reveal underlying emotional problems.

The year was 1993. I was a senior in high school. I had thoroughly enjoyed all four years of my high school career. Throughout high school, I had been involved in cheerleading, swimming, band, choir, and the spring musicals. I had great friends, and although I was far from being one of the most popular kids in school (I was one of those who just sort of walked through the halls un-noticed by most people except for my good friends), we had great times together. I was one of the "good kids". I didn't party, didn't break curfew, had friends who were like me in those aspects. The closest thing we ever did to being considered "bad" was toilet papering our crushes lawns and stalking their houses doing drive-bys over and over again to possibly get a glimpse of the poor unsuspecting schmuck. I was a "comfortable" teenager; greatly looking forward to the upcoming adventure I was to embark on the upcoming fall: college. All my life, I had looked forward to college. My cousins and I used to play college together, turning our houses and bedrooms into dorms and dorm rooms. I had visions of what my life would be like at college; on my own, doing my own thing, carving a future out for myself. The pictures in my mind of what college would be like were painted in large part by my mom who had told me many stories of the time that she spent in college; the great friends she made, the things she did, the activities she was involved in.

The plan was to go to the Nazarene college in Bethany, Oklahoma. I had family there, had spent time there in the summers visiting my cousins; and that is where my mom went to college. I was familiar with the town, familiar with the college campus, and because of the time I spent there in the summers with my cousins, I knew a few people. I knew that I was headed for the adventure of a lifetime. And I couldn't wait. The application was submitted, accepted, and dorm arrangements were made. Now all I had to do was wait....

Second semester of my senior year was in full swing. Rehearsals for the spring musical, "The Music Man" were beginning. Chamber Singers (the choir I was in) were performing up to two times a day at various locations. I was working part time after school at KFC. Needless to say, I was a busy senior. And I was enjoying it. I was also dating someone who I worked with at KFC (much to the chagrin of my parents who were less than pleased about it....ironically, I ended up marrying this guys best friend 10 years later....).

As the semester wore on, and summer was fast approaching, I noticed that my Chamber Singers dress was fitting a little more snugly than it had before. The aforementioned boyfriend also once made a comment about me being "squishy" when he was hugging me. This could be attributed to the fact that I worked at KFC and constantly snacked on the less than healthy, albeit very tasty, food that we made there. Regardless of the reason, I wanted to go to college healthy and aware of my food choices so that I would not fall victim to the dreaded "freshman fifteen".

My mom, being a "chronic weight watcher" had all the stuff necessary for me to learn how to eat; not necessarily lose weight, but just learn how to make smart choices where food is concerned. So, I pulled out all of her old Weight Watchers materials and began to use the program. I learned how many carbs were "OK" per day, how many proteins, veggies, fruits and fats....a word I had truly learned to fear and hate. Also allotted were optional calories which came in the form of salad dressing, candy, gum, etc. Yes....optional calories could be used on gum. No longer would I stick a piece of gum without calculating how many of my precious optional calories I was using.

Within the first week, I had lost seven pounds. It wasn't necessarily my intention, but since it had happened, I wasn't disappointed. My chamber singers dress fit well again, and my snug fitting jeans weren't quite so snug.

Week after week, I continued to lose weight. I could no longer go to restaurants without carrying my precious cheat book that showed me how many carbs, proteins, etc....each potential food item contained. If what I wanted to order was not listed, or I couldn't figure it out with certainty, I wouldn't order it. Eating out became a chore rather than a pleasure. Something to fear, rather than enjoy.

Once I hit a certain weight, my mom told me I needed to start using the tools to maintain my weight, not continue losing. But this meant increasing my daily allotment to which I had become so used to, and also (in my mind) meant gaining weight back, rather than maintaining it. It was a risk I was unwilling to take. In fact, the more pressure I got to increase to maintain, the lower I went in my daily portions. It became something I could control that no one else could....what I didn't realize, was that I was losing control...

Uprooted

Due to changes in the office, I get to move my desk.....once again. I just got moved a few months ago, and I get to move again.....to a smaller desk.....that I have to share with someone. Yipee. I'm kinda bummed right now, for more than one reason. Oh, well. Hope the weekend is good for everyone. Peace.

Care Bear Scare

Things have slowed down substantially at work, and I'm on break, so I have a little time this morning.

Yesterday I had a not so little scare with my precious Care Bear. Lately, we have been concerned that maybe she has a hearing problem. She turns the TV up very loud, doesn't seem to hear us when we holler at her (that could be attributed to her being in her own little world...I don't know) and it's started to concern us. I had been contemplating with the idea of taking her to get her hearing tested. When I looked in her ear yesterday and saw what I thought was dirt, but ended up being dried up blood, I hustled her to the doctor as fast as my little old car could carry us. ( I had already planned on taking her to the doc yesterday anyway due to the fact that she woke up in the middle of the night complaining of her bottom burning). I had the doctor check both things.

Her urine sample came back normal...not showing any signs of infection, and when he looked in her ear he didn't see any signs of blood in her inner ear. The burning he attributed to the fact that she loves to soak in bubble baths....no more bubble baths for Care Bear. And the blood in her ear he narrowed down to the fact that she does have some inflammation in her tubes and probably scratched the surface of her ear because it's bugging her. He prescribed some drops to take down the inflammation and referred us to a hearing doctor if after two weeks the drops don't improve her hearing. While I'm relieved that her ear isn't bleeding internally, I am concerned about her hearing. I'm hoping by all hope that these drops work. She already has eye problems. She doesn't need hearing problems on top of it. My poor baby. I'm wondering if these two issues could be why she's throwing more temper tantrums as of late. She just doesn't feel quite right.

Thanks to my mom for putting the prayer request out there about Care Bear on her blog yesterday since I couldn't do it. I appreciate those who read it and prayed for her. Continue to do so until I know her hearing is OK.

We're getting more snow here today. I fully expected to hear news that the U was closed again, but we're here. I got stuck twice in the snow on my street on my way here and was half hour late. I'm nervous about driving home in the dark at the end of the day. Icy roads+Dark=Treacherous driving for Kristen.

You Know You're Obsessed

with attempting to create new templates when you have a dream last night that Mrs. Tradeoff has a new template that includes animated clay-mation that talks and sings. Yeah. I think I'll go put away my study aids and go play Candy Land with my kids. Ta-Ta.

Experimentation

I did this on my lunch....won't get in trouble. Just playing....not the final product.

No Time For Blogging

Work is crazy right now. Boss told us under no certain terms "no playing....on task at all times", which basically means that if we are caught on the internet.....big trouble. I'm risking a be-heading right now just writing this. So, until things settle down around here, I'll be MIA. I was really hoping to catch up on everyone today, but doesn't look like it's gonna happen. :-( I'll be back as soon as I can. Love to all.

Wishing Relatives Were Closer

Well, here I am; back at work. The roads are clear enough to drive, the holidays are over and I feel like it's been a millenium rather than just a year since I graced the halls of this building.

It's not much of an exaggeration to say that I went a little stir crazy over the past two weeks; got a bit of the cabin fever. My kids were in rare form and it seemed like the goal of the "vacation" was drive mom as crazy as we can with temper tantrums, demands, messes, loud voices, arguing and general craziness. I know I wasn't the only one who was affected by the snow and the inability to go anywhere and do anything. My kids were feeling it, too, which I'm sure contributed to their behavior. But by last Thursday, I had had it. The forecast called for more snow to hit and the possibility was very strong that I would not be able to go to work the next day (which by that time I was so ready for!) As I watched the snowflakes begin to fall and continue to fall, I decided to bite the bullet and call the University snow line to find out my fate for the next day. The words that I heard pounded in my head: "The University has suspended all operations for Friday, December 29th due to snow....." I hung up the phone....that was all I needed to hear. The day had been awful. They hadn't even been particularly "bad" that day, just rowdy. Needing to release energy. Knowing that I was not going to get a reprieve the next day like I was counting on and dealing with a temper tantrum from my four year old daughter made me sorta, shall we say.... lose it. I laid on the couch, covered my head with a pillow and just cried. I didn't know what else to do. Daddy explained to them that mommy is "sad" and discussed with them their behavior as of late. The next day and the days following were a marked improvement. Guess they don't like seeing mommy cry. Regardless of the reason, I'm just glad it got better. The last few days they have been playing with their new toys together nicely, making play-dough creations (which is now ground into my carpet....any tips on how to get play dough out of carpet?!) and being generally pleasant.

Back in July, we had a family reunion in a lodge by a beautiful lake. My kids got to know all of their second cousins (my cousins kids) and had a great time playing with them. They particularly bonded with The Royal Kids , Anakin with Little Man, and my girls with Princess and Duchess. They talk about them frequently to this day and miss them often. Yesterday, during one of their games, Care Bear suggested they play a game. "I will be Princess, Anakin can be Little Man and Feisty will be Duchess." Feisty then informed her that she was going to be Little Man. For about the next hour, they role played the royal kids and it made me ache for my family so far away. The girls got pound puppies from their Grandma P for Christmas and when filling out the "adoption papers", Care Bear named hers "Duchess" (but her real name) in honor of her far away cousin whom she misses much.

So, now I'm back here. Life is "back to normal", whatever that is, and oddly enough, despite the fact that I was ready for a "break" and longing for adult conversation, I miss my kids a lot. Go figure.

I'm currently working on a new template. Don't know when it'll be done, but it's in progress. So for now, back to the stale one.
