--------silence-------

My Bible Study group is currently watching a group of DVDs done by a man named Rob Bell and a company called NOOMA. Each DVD is short and concise and the only person who appears typically in each DVD is Rob Bell. While they are short, they are thought provoking and power-punching.

Todays DVD was about 10 minutes long and the topic was "silence". The majority of the ten minutes we sat staring at a TV that was silent and dark with an occasional phrase that would flash across the screen. Phrases such as:

*Do you own a cell phone?
*Does your cell phone have voice mail and email access?
*Do you own a TV?
*Do you own more than one TV?
*How often do you find solitary moments?
*Is there a connection between our noisy lives and the inability to hear God speaking to us?
*Looking at your life, is it a life that says that you want to be able to hear God speak to you?

There were many more, but that is just an example. The silence in the room we sat in watching this was deafening. Which is, I suppose what the point is.

Why are we, as a society, uncomfortable with silence? Because it requires us to think? Because we are so accustomed to business, chaos and noise that silence is unwelcome? Because we may actually hear God speaking to us in His still, quiet voice? All of the above?

When the TV was silent, the room dark and no other noise could be heard except the muffled noise of the kids downstairs in the nursery, it was rather un-settling.

Silence is difficult to achieve. But it is highly under-rated and sorely under-utilized. How easy is it to have moments of solitude without any noise with young children running around consistently asking for things, or just being children? When our cell-phones are on, our TVs are on, the radio is on, the traffic is roaring, the computer is on. Pretty much impossible.

My life has been difficult lately. I have been searching for ways to make it easier. To make things less complicated. Maybe the answer has been staring me in the face all along. Silence. To hear God's still voice. Without all the noise.

I turned off the radio in my car on my way to work today. Silence was still difficult to achieve. My thoughts still raced through my head. Like all things, I suppose, silence will take practice.

As I got close to my office, in my effort to achieve silence, I barely noticed a car in front of me coming to a screeching hault. As I braked hard to avoid rear ending it, my eyes fell to a bumper sticker stuck to the car. The message? Silence is Golden. Coincidence? You decide.

Be still and know I am God. Psalms 46:10

This is the best thing you've written in a long time. I have been praying for you that God would work in your life concerning the things you mentioned. And that you would get closer to Him. He is the only answer. There are no coincidences when God is working. Praise His Name!

Unless you stay up into the night when everyone else is asleep, or get up very early (earlier than the girls), there is no silence possible except in your car. You have hit upon something very valuable.

Kristen,

Coincidence? I'm with you--I think not! THAT was a huge God-wink!

I so agree with your mom....this post is some excellent writing! You are a gifted writer, Kristen, and with your heart for the Lord, your mother's prayer-warrior heart--and your obedient spirit....I think we'll be reading, very soon, about how each and every single difficult thing currently in your life......simply, has vanished! May you be blessed Kristen! May God reveal Himself to you in very real and tangible ways--speaking directly to your listening heart! May the only remnants of these difficult things--be the lasting lessons and love you feel from your Creator, your Sustainer, your Father in Heaven!

Great, Great post!

Diane

One of my favorite scriptures. I enjoy silence most of my day since I'm home alone, but I know it's hard to find the silent moments in a busy household.

This was beautiful, Kristen, and reminded me again why I love to read what you write.

No, not a coincidence. I've been on a spiritual journey over the last 2 months and I've learned to see those types of signs around me. When I tune it, it seems messages are all around me. Messages that seem to bring peace and joy to my soul.

Silence is hard to learn, but vital to anyone's life - Christian or not. In the silence we hear much more than God's voice. We can also hear the rhythms of our bodies, the song of nature outside, the stillness that brings us back to basics. I love it.

Hi Kristen, trying to catch up with everyone today before I leave for the weekend!! I've just read the 3 posts I had missed...I went through the "wanting worms as a pet" when my boys were little! lol Worse was finding my oldest with a caterpillar hanging from his mouth cuz the neighbour girl dared him to eat one! UGH! I really enjoyed your "silence" post...it's so true, in today's world we are surrounded by noises and it's not very often we can find that complete silence. Given a chance, we might just be able to hear what God is trying to tell us:-) xox

I actually crave silence. It's difficult to get, but I love it when everything around me is totally quiet. It's the only time I can really think.

And somehow I don't think that bumper sticker was coincidence.

Great, great post Kristen. You have said this so well. I've been convicted about this very thing. It seems there always has to be some sort of "noise" going or we get restless (or something). I believe you are on to something. Perhaps the Lord is calling us to silence.

I enjoy silence at home, which usually only happens after the children are in bed. It is very peaceful. It DOES allow spiritual experiences and thinking to occur, which can be a great benefit in our lives :-)

Silence is golden and your Mom is correct in saying this is a great post. It is something we all need to hear and it was a blessing to me today! Thanks for sharing.
